Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland
The Society's library contains a good collection of books focussed on Irish history and archaeology. As a result of the Society's programme of Journal exchange, the library has an excellent collection of both local Irish and international journals.

This online catalogue is a means to access the holdings of 52 archives in Scotland.
UCD Archive and Library
Excellent archival collection relating to the development of the modern Irish state, includes the papers of Ernest Blythe, George Gavan Duffy, Kilmore Dispensary District (Monaghan).
UK National Archives
The National Archives of England, Wales and the United Kingdom has one of the largest archival collections in the world. The site includes an online catalogue.
 

The National Folklore Collections (UCD)

Copyright Library since 1801. Excellent collections of Irish manuscripts, ordnance survey maps and early printed books.
National Library of Ireland
Amongst many other treasures, the library holds estate records for some Monaghan estates: Leslie of Glaslough, Crofton, Dawson of Dartrey, Bath of Farney, Murray-Ker of Newbliss, Mayne and Smith Estates. Includes searchable online catalogues.

Part of the Irish Anglican website. Includes contacts for the clergy and administrations offices of the diocese.
Armagh Public Library
The nucleus of the collection is the personal library of Archbishop Richard Robinson, who founded the library in 1771. Also holds Archbishop Beresford's collection of archaeological artefacts.
Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich Memorial Library & Archive
A free, independent public reference library, which houses important collections relating to Irish history, the Irish language, ecclesiastical history, the Irish abroad, and Irish sport.
Catholic diocese of Clogher
Diocesan website. Includes a good short history of the diocese and Lough Derg. Lists contacts for the clergy and administration offices.
Central Catholic Library
This is a voluntary subscription library. The library currently holds over 100,000 titles in its lending and reference departments.

Presbyterian Historical Society of Ireland

Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Ireland
The Friends' Historical Library is the repository for the manuscript records of Quakers in Ireland and has a significant holding of printed books and pamphlets relating to Quakerism worldwide.

  Fermanagh County Museum
Along with collections of local artefacts from the earliest times, this progressive museum runs an education programme working closely with local schools and libraries.
  Millmount Museum

Ballyhalbert Historical Society
Ballyhalbert is a small village on the Ards Peninsula, County Down. This site includes historical information and photographs.
  Cahans Project
Non-profit group dedicated to promoting the history of Cahans Presbyterian Church, Monaghan and the mass emigration from the church in 1764. The group is also restoring the church building.
  Corduff Raferagh Heritage Group
Local group dedicated to the history of the Corduff/Raferage area of south Monaghan.
County Kildare Federation of Local History Groups
Founded in 1999 to foster communications, exchange ideas, and generally raise awareness of local history groups in the county.
County Louth Archaeological and Historical Society
Founded in 1903, this site give background to the society and its past publications.
Craigavon Historical Society
The site includes historical town trails for Lurgan and Portadown, extracts from past publications and a programme of the society's events.
Creggan History Society
The area covered by the Society is the ancient Irish Barony of the Upper Fews, in Co Armagh, and that part of the Creggan Parish in Co. Louth. The site includes an index to the society's publications.

Donegal Historical Society
The Donegal Historical Society which was founded by the late J.C.T. MacDonagh in 1946. With more than 900 members the Society is one of the largest local history groups in the country.
Federation of Ulster Local Studies
Umbrella group for historical societies in the nine counties of Ulster. The site gives an index to the Federation's magazine, Due North, and information on membership and local events.
  Glens of Antrim Historical Society
Founded in 1965 to promote the history of the Glens, the site includes photographs, videos, oral history, projects, publications, events, message board and information on membership.
Irish Railway Record Society

Lecale Historical Society
The Lecale Historical Society, founded in 1974, is based in Downpatrick, County Down. Its website includes an index to its publications and a list of upcoming events.

  Old Drogheda Society
This is a subsection of the Millmount Museum website giving information on membership of the Old Drogheda and the society's publications, events, library, archive and newspaper database.

  Rossmore Mausoleum Conservation Group
Non-profit group, founded in 2008, dedicated to preserving the built heritage of Rossmore Park, Monaghan.
  County Tipperary Historical Society
Founded in 1987 to promote the history, culture, heritage, folklore and geography of the county. All of the society's past publications are free to download.
  Ulster Architectural Heritage Society
The society promotes the appreciation of architecture from the prehistoric to the present in the nine counties of Ulster, and encourages its preservation and conservation.
  Ulster Society for Irish Historical Studies
Irish Historical Studies is a journal produced jointly by this Society and the Irish Historical Society. The site contains information about both organisations and their lecture programmes.

  An Taisce
An Taisce - 'The Store House, or Treasury' is The National Trust For Ireland. Established in 1948, it is the most influential environmental body in Ireland.
Cavan/Monaghan Rural Development
This local development organisation has a dedicated heritage officer for the counties of Cavan and Monaghan.
Celebrating Local History 2006
This a project of the LISC (NI) and is designed to highlight the resources available for community history in Northern Ireland. Events listings, local history by county etc.

This organisation was founded in 2004 and is attached to the Department of Modern History, National University of Ireland, Maynooth. Site gives information about events and database.
County Monaghan Heritage Office
A new office (since end 2004) of Monaghan County Council, charged with designing and implementing a heritage plan for the county.
  Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government
GIS heritage data for Ireland website. Includes sections on Parks & Wildlife, National Monuments, Architecture and Placenames with downloadable databases.
Heritage Council of Ireland
Established as a statutory body under the Heritage act 1995. Its role is to propose policies and priorities for the identification, protection, preservation and enhancement of national heritage.
Heritage Lottery Fund
Set up by Parliament in 1994 to give grants to a wide range of projects involving the local, regional and national heritage of the United Kingdom.
  Inventory of Heritage Organisations in Europe
This project aimed at presenting an overview of all non-governmental organisations in Europe engaged in heritage, ranging in scope from the supra-local to the whole of Europe.
  Irish Heritage Trust
Launched in 2006, the Irish Heritage Trust will acquire, through negotiation and tax incentives, historic properties, houses and gardens that will be open for everyone's enjoyment forever. Website not yet up and running.
  Irish Landmark Trust
The Irish Landmark Trust is a charitable organisation founded in 1992 that saves heritage buildings at risk of being lost through neglect or inappropriate intervention. We then give the buildings a future by letting them for self catering holidays in Ireland.
  MSc/Graduate Diploma World Heritage Management
University College Dublin. This course is intended for managers responsible for World Heritage sites and equivalent protected areas and those involved in the conservation and management of critical natural habitats worldwide.
  Ulster Local History Trust
The Ulster Local History Trust is dedicated to raising standards and promoting innovation in the voluntary local history movement within the nine counties of Ulster.
 

LOCAL DEVELOPMENT

Carrickmacross Workhouse
A restored Union Workhouse dating from 1842, now used to house various local enterprises. Manager, Kevin Gartlan and his team have been collecting information on both residents of the Workhouse and emigrants from the nearby Shirley Estate.
  Cassandra Hand Centre
The centre, built as a lace school in the mid-19th century, has recently been refurbished and is now used as a community meeting facility. The centre is collecting genealogical information on Clones, where it is located.
Ulster Community Investment Trust
Founded in 1995, this organisation provides loans and financial advice to community economic sector in Northern Ireland and the Border Counties of the Republic of Ireland.

Enhanced British Parliamentary Papers on Ireland
EPPI involves the electronic cataloguing and full-text digitisation of some 13,700 British Parliamentary papers from the University of Southampton's Ford Collection.
  Flax Growers List 1796
The Irish Linen Board published a list of nearly 60,000 individuals in 1796.  Spinning wheels were awarded based on the number of acres planted. Searchable list.
  Griffith's Valuation Index Extracts
Irelands Valuation office conducted it's first survey of property ownership in Ireland from 1848  to 1864, later known as 'Griffiths Valuation'. This site has extracts for every county in Ireland.
  Hearth Money Rolls, Monaghan, 1663 & 1666

  Fermanagh Freeholders
PRONI's freeholders project entailed the digitisation of c.5,500 sheets from pre-1840 Registers and Poll Books, and the provision of an index of names linked to the high-quality digitised images. This information is searchable and free.
  Orangeism in County Monaghan
Interesting site containing lists of County Monaghan lodges and masters in 1798, 1835, 1841 etc. Site also lists all people of Monaghan Cavan origin who died in World War I.
Townlands of County Monaghan
Monaghan County Council's website gives free access to 1:50,000 OS maps and aerial photographs for the county, searchable by townland name.

Praeger's ITB itineraries and accompanying maps
In preparing Irish Topographical Botany, Robert Lloyd Praeger conducted 200 days of fieldwork from 1896 to 1900. This site gives maps and itinerary for each county he visited, including Fermanagh, Tyrone and Monaghan.

  Scottish Place-Name Society

  Tyrone Guthrie Centre
A workplace/retreat for artists and creative people of all kinds. The house and grounds near Newbliss, Co. Monaghan, were bequeathed to the people of Ireland by Sir Tyrone Guthrie and the website includes a history of his family.
